History

The airline ceased most flight operations in February 2006 and filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition on February 21, 2006, but the petition was not immediately accepted by the court and its status and effect are not clear at this time.<ref>US Department of Transportation retrieved 16 May 2007</ref>

Some of the Florida Coastal Airlines fleet is stored with and being maintained by Lynx Airlines at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport. E-4 process

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:55 pm
See also Ektachrome for full details of Kodak E-series processes.

The E-4 process is a now outdated process for developing color reversal (transparency) photographic film.

The process is infamous for its use of the highly toxic reversal agent Tertiary Butyl-Amine Borane (TBAB). The use of the reversal agent permitted processing of the film without the manual reexposure that its predecessor E-3 required. The process was also faster and ran at 30°C (86°F), about 6°C (10°F) higher than E-3. The ME-4 process was a motion picture variation of the E-4 process.

The process was phased out in 1976 with the introduction of the E-6 process which was more environmentally friendly due to its lack of toxic chemicals.

Today the process is discontinued but was used up until 1996 for Kodak IE Color Infrared film. This was due to legal commitment by Kodak to provide the process for 30 years.

In bankruptcy the debtor, by way of a Motion to Avoid Lien, can avoid certain liens that attached to the debtor’s exempt property prior to the filing of the bankruptcy petition. This action is often used to clear title to land from a judgment lien arising out of pre-petition activity in a state court.

Drug Emporium

Drug Emporium is the name of a discount drug store corporation, founded in 1977 in Columbus, Ohio, that was sold to several different buyers during 2000 to 2001. Although several store locations continue to use the Drug Emporium name, these locations are no longer affiliated with the now-defunct Columbus-based corporation. At the company’s high water mark in the 1990s, there were almost 300 locations scattered throughout the United States, including stores that operated under the F&M and VIX banners.

The company declared bankruptcy in April of 2001 as a condition of its sale to Snyder Drug of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Various causes have been attributed, with most citing the company’s failure to effectively compete with Walgreens, CVS Corporation and other drug store chains. Additionally, much time, effort and money was spent attempting to leverage the power of the brick and mortar Drug Emporium locations into the failed DrugEmporium.com website that was seen as the company’s future. This “click and mortar” approach, typical of the pre-Dot-com bubble mentality of the late 1990s never fully materialized and only served to deepen the company’s economic troubles.

The large base of franchised Texas and West Virginia locations, along with company-owned California locations were sold off to independent owners and Big A Drug, respectively. Then, on September 12, 2003, Snyder Drug closed all of the remaining corporately-owned stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Wisconsin due to significant capital infusions and to escape bankruptcy. Although the chain was founded in Columbus, Ohio, it no longer has stores in its home state. Snyder Drug continues to operate and is owned by the Katz Group of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The North Hollywood, California store was regularly used in the TV series “Malcolm in the Middle” as the “Lucky Aide” store where Lois worked.

Sex abuse settlement and bankruptcy

Under Bishop Skylstad the diocese declared bankruptcy to protect it from claims of people molested by priests.

The Diocese of Spokane as part of its bankruptcy has agreed to pay at least US$48 million as compensation to people abused by priests. This payout has to be agreed with by the victims and a Judge before it will be made.<ref name=”bbc”/>

According to Federal Bankruptcy Judge Gregg W. Zive, money for the settlement would come from insurance companies, the sale of church property, contributions from Catholic groups and from the diocese’s parishes.<ref name=”bbc”/>

Buy-side analyst

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 6:46 pm

Buy-side analysts (”buy-siders”) work for money management firms such as mutual funds, pension funds, trusts, and hedge funds. They are incentivised to identify investment opportunities that will improve the net worth of the portfolio they work for.

A buy-side analyst typically works in a mutual fund, pension fund, or other non-brokerage firm, and provides research and recommendations exclusively for the benefit of the company’s own money managers (as opposed to individual investors). Unlike sell-side recommendations and reports—which are meant for the analyst’s brokerage firm’s clients, and the broad outlines of which the press often widely disseminates—buy-side recommendations are not available to anyone outside the firm. If the buy-side analyst stumbles upon a formula, vision, or approach that proves effective, it is kept secret.

Sabbatical officer

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:56 pm

A sabbatical officer is a full-time officer elected by the members of a students’ union (and the similar Students’ Association and Students’ Representative Council), commonly at a higher education establishment such as a university. Sabbatical officers are usually trustees of their students’ association, in its capacity as a Charity.

Sabbatical officers are normally elected annually, for a one-year term, i.e. a “sabbatical year”. Some students’ unions allow their sabbatical officers stand for re-election for a second year. Terms of more than two years are not permitted in the United Kingdom, under the Education Act 1994. Typically, the primary requirement for candidacy (and election) is that a candidate be a member of the body the relevant association at the time of their candidacy.

Sabbatical years are either taken in between years of study (for example between year two and three of a typical degree, sitting the third year twelve months later than would have normally been the case) or else immediately after graduation. They are almost always paid positions, with funds coming from the students’ union itself, or directly from the educational institution. The officer generally retains student status during their time in office.

A university students’ union may have one or more sabbatical officers, with as many as eight being not unheard-of. Each has a specific job description. The most senior post, often associated with special privileges and responsibilities such as membership of the University Court, is often termed the President of the students’ union. Other typical roles include Education Officer, Welfare Officer, and Sports President. Together they form part or all of the “executive” or “executive committee” of their association. They will be supported by unpaid members who continue their studies. In a few cases, the sabbaticals work for separate bodies within a larger students’ association at their institution; for example one sabbatical officer for an entertainments union and one for a sports union.

Some Further Education colleges also have small numbers of sabbatical officers but these are rare, partly due to funding restrictions. Often the executive members of the students’ association of these bodies will do the job whilst still studying.

Student organisations outwith individual educational institutions – such as the National Union of Students of the United Kingdom – sometimes have their own sabbatical officers drawn from one of their member institutions.

Alda (automobile)

The Alda was a French automobile created by Fernand Charron of CGV; it was manufactured between 1912 and 1922. The car had a dashboard radiator and a 3187cc four-cylinder engine that was claimed to be capable of going “6 to 47 mph in top gear”. Cars were available with the Henriod rotary valve system; another version featuring six cylinders was also offered. Post-war, the four was the only model offered, though it was rebored to 3563cc.

The Alda is most remarkable, if at all, for the manner in which its name was chosen. “ALDA” was an acronym, standing for “Ah - La Délicieuse Automobile!”. The name was invented by the readers of the magazine l’Auto; this, to be sure, is a highly unusual, if not unique, manner of choosing the name of an automotive marque.
